Zanjan University of Medical Sciences (ZUMS) emphasizes that public awareness regarding risk factors, symptom identification, and proactive screening is critical to improving clinical outcomes.

Understanding the Three Common Types of Skin Cancer

The skin, the body’s largest organ, acts as a primary barrier against external threats. Despite this, it remains vulnerable to damage from ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Clinicians categorize skin cancer into three primary types:

  • Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): The most common form, often presenting as a pearly or shiny red bump that fails to heal. While BCC rarely spreads (metastasizes) to other organs, it can cause significant local tissue damage.
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): The second most common type, typically found on sun-exposed areas like the ears, lips, and nose. Unlike BCC, SCC has a higher potential to invade underlying tissues and spread to other parts of the body, making early identification essential.
  • Malignant Melanoma: The most dangerous form. Originating from pigment-producing cells, melanoma can appear in various colors—brown, black, red, or even white. It is highly aggressive and prone to rapid spreading; therefore, prompt professional evaluation of any changing mole or lesion is vital.

Risk Factors and UV Exposure

Prolonged exposure to UV radiation is the primary environmental risk factor. UV rays originate not only from direct sunlight but also from tanning beds and sunlamps. Importantly, UV radiation remains a threat even on cloudy or cold days. While individuals with fair skin, light-colored hair, or light eyes are at a higher risk, all skin types remain susceptible.

Other contributing factors include:

  • History of chronic inflammation, burns, or scarring.
  • Family or personal history of skin cancer.
  • Exposure to chemical carcinogens (e.g., arsenic) or ionizing radiation.
  • Immune system suppression.
  • Pre-cancerous lesions (e.g., actinic keratosis, leukoplakia).

Proactive Prevention

Protecting skin health requires consistent adherence to defensive measures:

  • Avoid Peak UV Hours: Minimize sun exposure between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
  • Sunscreen Protocol: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Reapply every two hours, and immediately after swimming or heavy perspiration.
  • Physical Barriers: Wear broad-brimmed hats, UV-protective sunglasses, and light-colored, long-sleeved clothing.
  • Environmental Awareness: Be mindful of reflective surfaces such as water, sand, and snow, which intensify UV radiation.

Early Detection: The ABCDE Rule

Self-examination is the most effective tool for early detection. ZUMS experts recommend a monthly full-body inspection, including hard-to-see areas like the scalp, between fingers/toes, soles of the feet, and behind the knees.

When evaluating suspicious moles or lesions, utilize the ABCDE criteria:

  • A (Asymmetry): One half of the mole does not match the other.
  • B (Border): The edges are irregular, ragged, or notched.
  • C (Color): The color is not uniform; it includes shades of brown, black, tan, or even red/white.
  • D (Diameter): The lesion is larger than 6 millimeters (about the size of a pencil eraser).
  • E (Evolving): The mole is changing in size, shape, color, or elevation; or if it begins to itch, bleed, or crust.Any lesion exhibiting these characteristics requires immediate evaluation by a dermatologist.

Clinical Conclusion: Skin cancer is manageable when identified early. By integrating preventive habits into daily life and remaining vigilant about skin changes, individuals can significantly reduce their risk and ensure long-term dermatological health.
