Dental Specialist: Fluoride Therapy Prevents up to 50 Percent of Tooth Decay in Children
Dr. Maryam Fazli, dentist and faculty member of the Department of Dentistry, stated that regular use of fluoride can reduce the incidence of dental caries in children by 40 to 50 percent, emphasizing that school‑based varnish therapy programs must be pursued seriously. According to Webda–Zanjan, Dr. Fazli highlighted the benefits and necessity of fluoride for dental health in an interview with the radio program “Apple of Health.” She explained that fluoride is a chemical element effective in preventing tooth decay. By forming strong bonds with calcium in the tooth structure, fluoride strengthens enamel against the acidic environment of the mouth and protects it from damage. She referred to various methods of fluoride intake, including its addition to drinking water, salt, and milk, as well as topical applications through varnish, gel, and mouthwash. She noted that the school‑based fluoride varnish program, offered free of charge in elementary schools, is one of the most effective methods for children. Addressing concerns raised on social media about potential side effects of fluoride, Dr. Fazli clarified that the amount of fluoride used in preventive methods is fully standardized and safe, with no serious adverse effects. She expressed concern that non‑scientific information circulating online has caused confusion among families.
Dr. Fazli identified the optimal period for fluoride therapy as up to the age of 16. In cities such as Zanjan, where the fluoride content of drinking water is low, she stressed the necessity of conducting varnish therapy twice annually, at six‑month intervals. Concluding her remarks, the faculty member advised families to take children’s participation in school varnish therapy programs seriously and to ensure the use of fluoride‑containing toothpaste with standard concentrations (1000 to 1450 ppm), appropriate to the age of their children.
